OUR HISTORY

The construction of the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées began with the reign of Italy.
In those times, Stresa was not recognized as the “Pearl” of Verbano until the beginning of the twentieth century, when it was identified as the most prestigious place on the lake Maggiore.
The small houses were situated close to the foothills of the mountain Mottarone, whilst next to the shores of the lake, today filled with villas and hotels were meadows, fields and a few vineyards.

The park was established at the same time as the Grand Hotel, in 1863. From contemporary illustrations and lithographs, one immediately realizes what the clients (the Omarini brothers) and the designer (the architect Antonio Polli) had in mind: in front of the incomparable sight of the Borromean islands, they wanted to create a parterre of flowerbeds set in the Italian style. These flowerbeds had to be laid out beyond the street of Sempione as well, in the garden of the landing stage constructed on an embankment by the lake.
The Grand Hotel is constantly being renewed. It has repeatedly been enlarged and since the early 20th century has its present appearance.

The Pools in the Park

Completely renovated between 2019 and 2021, during the summer months, residents of the Grand Hotel Des Iles Borromées can access the green area “Le Piscine nel Parco”. Large naturalistic swimming pool for swimming and relaxing on the shore with water games, swimming pool with diving board, hydromassage beds, waterfalls, neck massage and phlebological path. “Le Bistrot” open for poolside lunches, gourmet snacks and aperitifs. Also open to non-resident guests at the hotel.

It was inaugurated on March 21, 1863, in the presence of some great hoteliers, different personalities and a crowd of noblewomen, the Borromées immediately established itself as “The Grand Hotel” of Lake Maggiore.
In 2023 we will celebrate our first 160 years of life!

Guests use to go to the fountain in the evening, whose night lighting makes reading the monument exciting, suggestive and almost “animated” by the reverberation of the water games on the mosaic walls.

The hotel boasts the coat of arms of “Historical place of Italy” which has now been restored thanks to the expertise of the architect Statilio Ubiali, who integrated the new works with the original Art Nouveau style.
